About the role:
This is a hands-on, technically grounded accounting role within one of our Financial Accounting sub-teams. The Senior Accountant is responsible for producing accurate, timely and well-evidenced month-end journals, balance sheet reconciliations and management accounting outputs for their assigned area — with the level of skill, judgement and autonomy expected from a qualified or nearly qualified accountant. The role sits one level below the Financial Controller and plays a pivotal part in making the close run smoothly every month.
What you’ll be doing:
Month-End Close
Own the month-end journals, accruals, prepayments and reclassifications for your assigned area — ensuring all entries are accurately calculated, clearly supported by evidence and posted within the close timetable.
Take the lead on close activities for your sub-area without needing to be directed at each step — managing your own workload against the close calendar and flagging blockers or issues to the Financial Controller promptly.
Prepare and review accruals for your cost or revenue area, including identifying missing invoices or accruals from operational data, and ensuring the P&L reflects the correct position at period end.
Provide clear, well-documented close workings for all journals posted — so that entries can be understood, reviewed and recreated by any member of the team.
Balance Sheet Reconciliations
Own and maintain balance sheet reconciliations for all accounts within your assigned scope — completing them to timetable, investigating and resolving all reconciling items promptly, and ensuring your reconciliation pack is always audit-ready.
Proactively identify and clear aged or unresolved items from your balance sheet accounts — escalating items that require cross-functional resolution and following through until they are closed.
Support the Financial Controller in the monthly review of the balance sheet pack — providing clear commentary on movements and ensuring any areas of risk or uncertainty are clearly flagged.
Management Accounting & Reporting
Prepare accurate, well-presented monthly reporting schedules for your assigned area — including cost centre analysis, variance commentary and any other regular outputs required by the Financial Controller or management accounting team.
Write clear, concise variance commentary that explains movements in your area against budget, forecast and prior period — going beyond describing the number to identifying the underlying cause.
Support the Financial Controller in the preparation of the management accounts pack — ensuring your area's numbers are accurate, submitted on time and clearly cross-referenced.
Technical Accounting & Standards
Apply relevant accounting standards (IFRS and UK GAAP as applicable) to transactions within your assigned area — making appropriate accounting judgements and documenting your rationale clearly.
Identify and escalate any transactions or events that may require technical accounting consideration beyond your authority level — working with the Financial Controller or Head of Financial Accounting to ensure the correct treatment is applied.
Stay current on developments in accounting standards relevant to your area, flagging any potential impact on InPost's accounting to the Financial Controller.
Audit Support & Controls
Prepare audit-ready working papers and schedules for your assigned area — ensuring all positions are fully evidenced, clearly cross-referenced and provided to auditors promptly.
Respond to auditor queries relating to your area accurately and in a timely manner — managing the resolution of any findings and implementing agreed recommendations.
Maintain year-round audit readiness — keeping reconciliations current, working papers up to date and controls evidenced throughout the year rather than only at year-end.
Supporting the Team
Provide guidance and on-the-job support to Management Accountants and Trainee Accountants within the team — reviewing their work, answering technical questions and helping them develop their accounting skills and understanding of the ledger.
Identify opportunities for process improvement within your area — proposing practical enhancements and working with the Financial Controller and Finance Transformation team to implement them.
Cover other areas of the ledger when colleagues are absent — maintaining continuity of the close process and demonstrating the breadth of accounting knowledge expected at Senior Accountant level.
What we need from you:
We’re looking for people who are ready for a fast paced environment, get their kicks out of problem solving and can balance getting today's stuff done, whilst building for the future. We’re looking for people with drive and natural curiosity – who want to do things differently. And do them brilliantly.
We’d be particularly excited to hear from you if:
Qualifications & Experience
Qualified or nearly qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent, or in the final stages of qualification) with demonstrable experience of managing your own area of a month-end close process.
Strong working knowledge of balance sheet reconciliation, accruals accounting and management account preparation — with a track record of producing accurate, timetabled outputs independently.
Experience of working within a multi-entity, ERP-based accounting environment — SAP, Unit4, SAGE or similar.
Demonstrable ability to apply accounting standards to practical transactions and to document your judgements clearly and concisely.
Experience of supporting or mentoring more junior team members is desirable.
Skills & Competencies
Technically capable and intellectually curious — applies accounting standards with confidence, asks the right questions when uncertain, and takes pride in getting the numbers right. Self-sufficient and organised — manages their own close workload without needing to be chased, meets deadlines consistently and knows when to escalate.
Accurate and detail-oriented — takes genuine ownership of the quality of their area of the ledger and their reconciliations.
Clear communicator — writes variance commentary that explains rather than describes, and flags issues to the Financial Controller in a clear, factual and timely way.
Collaborative team member — shares knowledge with junior colleagues, covers when needed and contributes to a well-functioning team close.
The InPost process:
We pride ourselves on our candidate experience. We want to make this as straightforward as possible, for you and for us! We will try our best to get back to you within a few days to let you know if we’d like to take you to the first stage. This normally involves a 20 minute chat with our Talent Team. If we both feel the connection, you’ll then go through another one or two stages, depending on the level of the role.
At InPost, we love uniqueness. Our strength is our people.
We strive to create an open, equal, inclusive environment in which everyone has the opportunity to flourish and be themselves.
