About the role:
As Shift Manager at InPost Distribution Southampton, you will take full responsibility for the smooth and efficient running of warehouse operations during your shift. You will lead and support a team of warehouse staff and drivers, ensuring all processes are completed safely, accurately, and on time.
You will play a key role in driving operational performance, meeting KPIs, and continuously improving efficiency through Lean practices. Alongside day to day operations, you will oversee workforce planning, transport coordination, stock control, and quality standards, ensuring everything runs to a high level of consistency and compliance.
This is a hands-on leadership role where you will be expected to make quick decisions, solve problems effectively, and maintain strong communication across teams to ensure seamless shift transitions and operational continuity.

📅 Shift Pattern: Any 5 out of 7 days
🕒 Hours: 12:00pm - 20:00pm

What you’ll be doing:
Leading, motivating, and developing a team of warehouse staff and drivers to deliver high performance, accountability, and a positive working culture
Taking full ownership of shift operations, ensuring smooth running of all warehouse processes including sorting, scanning, labelling, parcel handling, and throughput
Managing day-to-day performance, setting clear expectations, and ensuring operational targets and KPIs are consistently achieved
Driving continuous improvement across processes using Lean principles to improve efficiency, accuracy, and service quality
Overseeing workforce planning, including rotas, staffing levels, and coordination with agencies to ensure full operational coverage
Coordinating transport operations with drivers and the Transport Department to ensure timely, accurate, and efficient deliveries
Managing stock control, including cash-on-delivery shipments, reporting, documentation, and accurate record keeping
Ensuring full compliance with Health & Safety standards and maintaining a safe, clean, and compliant working environment at all times
Conducting regular quality checks, ensuring correct labelling standards, and overseeing cycle counts and inventory checks
Leading shift handovers with clear, accurate communication to ensure operational continuity
Identifying issues quickly, taking decisive action, and resolving operational problems to maintain service levels
Managing performance, coaching team members, and supporting ongoing training and development
Controlling costs and supporting efficient use of resources across the shift
Promoting a strong, inclusive, and engaged team culture where people feel supported and motivated
What we need from you:
Lead and motivate a team: Proven track record in people management, successfully motivating and leading diverse teams to consistently achieve and exceed performance targets. Must have the right to work in the UK.
Drive operational excellence: At least 1 year of hands-on experience in a fast-paced Distribution or Logistics environment, with strong knowledge of parcel handling, sorting, scanning, labelling, and overall throughput. Confident driving and surpassing operational KPIs to deliver measurable improvements.
Manage drivers and customer interactions: Coordinate drivers and support customers collecting parcels, ensuring smooth handovers, clear communication, and excellent service.
Plan, organise, and prioritise: A calm and focused mindset, able to forecast staffing needs, manage rotas, coordinate leave, and prioritise daily tasks effectively while keeping operations running smoothly.
Prioritise safety and quality: Strong understanding of Health & Safety regulations and warehouse compliance, maintaining a safe, clean, and organised environment while performing quality checks to uphold standards.
Problem-solve and make decisions: Strong practical problem-solving skills, making common-sense decisions to quickly and effectively resolve operational challenges.
Be digitally confident: Proficient in essential computer software and systems, navigating digital tools critical to warehouse and logistics management with ease.
Communicate clearly and effectively: Exceptional time management and communication skills, capable of providing clear handovers, engaging with your team, and supporting staff while meeting strict deadlines.
Have a background in driving: Ideally, you’ll have experience in driving or managing drivers, giving you insight into route planning, delivery schedules, and operational coordination.
